Around the turn of the century, I had the good fortune to meet a young Forrest Wozniak. We started working together, and he is probably the only person resembling an apprentice student that I ever really had, who wanted to actually learn the trade. Fifteen years later, he is self-sufficient as a sign painter. But we still work together on half-a-dozen to a dozen jobs a year. Forrest’s business skills and my design and pattern-making led to an effective partnership. Meaning, he works with the client, and the city, if necessary, and does material procurement, and I stay in the shop and draw. Then we paint together (or, he paints it alone, on small lettering jobs).
